Lead Android Mobile Engineer (DevOps)

A vacancy exists for a Lead Android Mobile Engineer within the Micro Merchant Division – Touchsides, in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The Lead Android Mobile Engineer will lead the entire mobile app lifecycle right from concept stage until delivery and post launch support. Play a supporting role and work closely with other mobile app developers in the team to innovate app functionality and design. Perform detailed Code Reviews and setting Coding standards across the team to maintain consistency.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and delegate duties to the mobile development team
  • Understand and translate business requirements, designs and wireframes into high quality code
  • Design, build, and maintain high performance, reusable, and reliable code
  • Ensure the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of the application
  • Identify and correct bottlenecks and fix bugs
  • Help maintain code quality, organization, and automation
  • Establish development standards for the Mobile team
  • Implement functional Mobile Application Architecture
  • Support the entire Mobile Application Development Lifecycle
  • Troubleshoot and debug to optimize performance
  • Develop interfaces to improve user experience and interface

In order to be considered for this position, the following requirements must be met:

  • BSc or BA in computer science, engineering, or relevant field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in mobile application development
  • 5+ years should be senior mobile developer experience partaking in Solution Architecture.
  • Proven experience in Mobile Application Architecture or Solution Architecture, preferably designing and delivering complex mobile applications.

Competencies required:

  • Proficient in Android application development.
  • Able to develop and architect multiple Android applications across versions.
  • Solid understanding of Android SDK, different versions of Android, and how to deal with different screen sizes.
  • Strong knowledge of Android UI design principles, patterns, and standard practices.
  • Experience with third-party libraries and APIs to integrate to backend systems
  • Ability to resolve code conflicts.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Work progress tracking and management
  • Experience with offline storage, data synchronization, threading, and performance tuning
  • Ability to design applications around natural user interfaces.
  • Knowledgeable on the open-source Android ecosystem and the libraries available for common tasks
  • Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Familiarity with cloud message APIs and push notifications
  • An abililty for benchmarking and optimization
  • Understanding of Google’s Android design principles, interface and Material design guidelines
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and agile development cycles
  • Familiarity with the following technologies and tools is advantageous:
  • Java, Kotlin, Retrofit, GSON, ObjectBox, Crashlytics, Espresso, Junit, Gradle, Azure Devops, CI/CD pipelines
